Mia Munro

Staff Attorney

Mia Munro leads ERA’s efforts to assist the reentry of women into the workforce following incarceration so they can support their families. She also focuses on protecting and expanding the rights of pregnant workers in support of ERA’s Working Families Campaign. In 2011, Mia launched a direct services program for pregnant women and mothers seeking to assert their employment rights. She has provided advice and counseling to hundreds of pregnant women and caregivers, many of whom Mia helped to obtain the leave and accommodations to which they were entitled. Mia also leads ERA’s advocacy efforts with respect to the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, pending before the U.S. Congress, and co-wrote Expecting A Baby, Not A Lay-Off: Why Federal Law Should Require the Reasonable Accommodation of Pregnant Workers (ERA May 2012). Mia closely monitors administrative rulemaking relating to the rights of pregnant workers, and participates in amicus efforts to ensure that state and federal pregnancy discrimination and family leave law is interpreted correctly.

Additionally, Mia created a coalition with health care providers to educate their pregnant patients about their workplace rights, and works with ERA fellows and staff to expand the coalition.

Mia Munro came to ERA as a New York University School of Law Reproductive Justice and Women’s Rights Fellow in the fall of 2011. Before arriving at ERA, Mia showed a strong dedication to civil rights. While in law school, Mia provided legal assistance to marginalized individuals with employment, education, and other issues. Before law school, she was at the Department of Justice working to end human trafficking and forced prostitution, and at the National Whistleblower Center working to increase protections for employees who report misconduct at work.

Mia received a J.D. from New York University School of Law and a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.
