Operations Manager: Available Immediately
The Operations Manager is responsible for providing administrative, operational, and program support for the Executive Director. Includes communicating with the Executive Board, managing office operations, coordinating with vendors, assisting with communications/development/finance, coordination of ERA events, providing oversight of program assistant and interns, drafting correspondence and communicating with clients and public, scheduling and making travel arrangements, performing web based research, data entry, and other administrative duties as assigned. Salary 45-50k per year with benefits, depending on experience.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for office operations (mail, inventory, supplies, equipment, calendaring, room reservations, facilities, office filing systems)
- Serve as primary liaison to the ERA Board of Directors
- Assist with and coordinate all office administrative duties (reception, mail, phone, routing calls, greeting visitors)
- Data entry, translation, editing, and proofreading of various documents
- Assist with special events, both internal and external, as needed
- Conduct office orientations for new staff, volunteers and interns
- Update and maintain ERA Office Procedures Manual, and update and circulate office forms/rosters
- Assist Development, Finance and Legal Departments with special projects as needed
- Assist and prepare content for ERA communications
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum three years relevant office experience, experience with Development/Fundraising a plus
- B.A. or equivalent and Spanish language proficiency preferred
- Knowledge and understanding of public interest law firms and/or comparable nonprofit experience
- Highly organized and exceptional attention to detail; punctuality is a must
- Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, Board members, and members of the public
- Unimpeded use of upper extremities and ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to problem-solve, demonstrate sound judgment and maintain strict confidentiality
- Knowledge of standard office software applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, Internet Explorer)
- Strong organizational and administrative skills and strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure in a busy environment and willingness to learn new things and take on challenges
- Operate multi-line phone system, office equipment including copier, fax machine, mailing machine, computer

Part-Time Communications Manager: Available Immediately
The Communications Manager will work to fulfill ERA’s communications goals and objectives, including maintaining a strong and ongoing ERA presence in traditional and electronic media; ensuring that ERA’s publications and other products are strategically disseminated to the media, advocates, policymakers and others, and responding to inquiries from the media and the general public.
Essential Functions
The following are the primary responsibilities of the Communications Manager:
- Assist Executive Director with development of media and other communication strategy
- Provide oversight for website overhaul and redesign with outside consultant; act as primary “webmaster” for ERA website
- Manage and develop new media communications, including Facebook, Twitter, and other forms of electronic media
- Prepare content for a variety of ERA products, including the website, blog, media materials, factsheets, proposals
- Respond to inquiries from the media, professionals in the field, and the public
- Media pitching around ERA, its litigation and other advocacy efforts, opinion pieces, and events
- Develop and maintain outreach contact lists for the media, key stakeholders, policymakers, and others
- Create reports on effectiveness of communications efforts
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field, with legal/civil rights/women’s rights experience strongly preferred
- 2-5 years in a related field, such as communications, journalism, issues-related campaign work or other media advocacy
- Superior written and oral communication skills, with editing experience
- Capable of meeting tight deadlines, with proven experience producing a variety of communications work products.
- Excellent computer skills, including CMS, website design/maintenance, MS suite
- Experience working with new/social media, print, broadcast, social networks, blogs, etc., at national, local and regional levels
- Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to work with diverse individuals and facilitate consensus building
- Ability to take complicated ideas and communicate them effectively to various audiences
- Knowledge of various media and online tools: Constant Contact, VOCUS, Google Analytics, Meltwater Press
- Strong project management and organizational skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills and willingness to be flexible to complete urgent tasks
- Available to drive and work off regular business hours to receive calls from the media and respond to emerging stories

Ruth Chance Law Fellow
Equal Rights Advocates’ Ruth Chance Law Fellow is an entry-level attorney position for a recent J.D. law school graduate. As a member of the legal services team at ERA, the Ruth Chance Law Fellow oversees the Advice and Counseling Program, assists other attorneys with litigation and special projects, and participates in public education efforts.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee and coordinate Advice & Counseling program, including orienting and coordinating ERA (student) law clerks. Work with law students and attorneys in providing information, advice and representation to women who have been discriminated against on the basis of sex and/or race in employment and/or educational opportunities.
- Participate in public hearings and conferences, press relations, writing articles for ERA publications.
- Assist Staff Attorneys with ongoing litigation and special projects. Tasks include, but are not limited to: interviewing clients and potential witnesses; drafting and responding to discovery requests; researching and drafting briefs, motions and supporting exhibits; preparing for or participating in depositions; and organizing files and documents.
- Oversee, coordinate and lead “Know Your Rights” training sessions and other public workshops or presentations.
- Oversee and coordinate substantive updates of “Know Your Rights” brochure series, “Know Your Rights” presentation training materials, law student orientation materials, and Advice and Counseling resource materials.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor from a U.S. law school awarded in 2012 or 2013
- Licensed to practice law in California or candidate for July 2013 Bar exam.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to women's rights and legal issues affecting women.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to civil rights and legal issues affecting people of color and other disadvantaged populations.
- Dedicated team player with a commitment to collaboration and the highest level of client service.
- Ability to problem-solve, exercise sound judgment, work independently and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to interact professionally and effectively with co-workers, board members, volunteers, clients, outside counsel, court personnel, organization donors and guests.
- Demonstrated commitment to and involvement with community concerns.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated skill in legal research, analysis and writing.
- Ability to complete assignments and responsibilities accurately and in a timely manner, often with strict and/or conflicting deadlines.
- Proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite and Westlaw or other online research applications.
- Bilingual (English + Spanish, Cantonese or Vietnamese) preferred.
The Ruth Chance Law Fellow is a one or two year (renewable by mutual agreement) position beginning August 2013. This is a full-time, exempt position with a salary of 45,000 and excellent benefits, including three weeks paid vacation.

About Equal Rights Advocates
Founded in 1974, Equal Rights Advocates is a nonprofit legal organization dedicated to protecting and expanding economic and educational access and opportunities for women and girls.
Position Overview
Equal Rights Advocates is looking for a creative, organized, dedicated individual to join our team as a Writing/Social Media Intern. The intern will provide support to the Executive Director and overall organization on outreach using social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.) platforms as well as other communication avenues such as website and blog content, newsletters and press releases.
Responsibilities
Monitor ERA’s Online Presence:
- Serve as social media coordinator for ERA on various online media platforms
- Raise awareness of the organization’s programmatic work through targeted media outreach
- Keep up to date on key media initiatives that will continue to enhance ERA’s presence
- Overall assist in developing ERA’s online strategies
Research & Writing
- Research new sites and networks that may be valuable in promoting ERA’s mission
- Conduct social media research and apply to future media initiatives and outreach
- Create copy and craft pitches to be used in press releases and other public forums
Preferred Qualifications
A minimum of a two-month commitment is required and applicants available for longer commitments are encouraged. Interns will conduct research and writing, promote ERA on applicable social media platforms, attend meetings, and undertake other tasks as necessary, under the direction of ERA staff. Ideal candidates will have:
- Enthusiasm and commitment for the mission of Equal Rights Advocates
- Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program focused in journalism, marketing, communications, English or women’s studies
- Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills
- Must already be very active on Facebook and Twitter (please send your Twitter @name)
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Professional demeanor and excellent relationship skills
- Highly organized and ability to manage multiple projects
- Preferred experience in online e-marketing platforms such as Vertical Response

This is an unpaid volunteer internship. Students are encouraged to apply for funding separately. Most law clerks and internships are able to obtain funding or academic credit for clerking at ERA. Some interns may be able to obtain Academic Credit or Work Study through their school.
Law Clerk Internships
ERA is seeking Law Clerks for its 2012 academic year. We have 3 to 4 positions for Summer 2012, and three for Fall of 2012.
Law Clerks have the unique opportunity to work in an exciting and cutting-edge non-profit women’s rights law firm. ERA has been fighting for women’s equality through litigation and advocacy for over 35 years. Under the supervision of ERA attorneys, Law Clerks staff our Advice and Counseling line. They interview callers and provide legal advice regarding sex discrimination, sexual harassment, title IX enforcement, family/medical leave, and other employment issues. Law Clerks also assist with impact litigation and legislation through research and writing assignments; attending court hearings, depositions, and internal litigation strategy sessions; and working with ERA lawyers on legislative advocacy. Law clerks may also have the opportunity to present educational workshops to community groups regarding sex discrimination and women’s rights.
ERA requires a commitment of 16-20 hours during the school year and 10 to 11 weeks full time in the summer, and accepts 2L and 3L students only. Our internships are unpaid. In addition, IL students have the opportunity to volunteer for dedicated projects. Qualifications
- Excellent writing & research skills;
- Demonstrated commitment to women’s issues, public interest law and racial justice;
- Coursework in Employment Discrimination, Constitutional Law, Evidence, Critical Race Theory, Feminist Jurisprudence, Immigration Law, Public Interest Law;
- Experience working on ERA’s focus areas, including sexual harassment, employment issues, affirmative action, welfare, family/work, immigration, and economic self-sufficiency; and,
- Bilingual ability in Spanish (highly desirable), Cantonese, or Mandarin (a plus)
