Women Workers

Many working women continue to face sex discrimination and other unfair treatment on the job, including sexual harassment and assault, wage theft, unequal pay, and other injustices. Women in male-dominated industries and those who are marginalized by race, poverty, immigration status, and/or sexual orientation often confront multiple barriers to equal opportunity and fair treatment at work.

Working for the Women of Wal-Mart

Equal Rights Advocates and co-counsel file for class certification in a new, re-tooled Dukes v. Wal-Mart. On behalf of a proposed class of over 150,000 women workers at California Wal-Mart and Sam’s Clubs stores, the plaintiffs allege that Wal-Mart management discriminates against women workers in pay and promotion decisions. The case is part of ERA’s ongoing efforts to combat wage discrimination.read more

Maria: Fighting Back Against Sexual Harassment and Retaliation

Maria, a single mother who was supporting three young children, worked as a night-shift janitor in San Francisco for ABM Industries Incorporated (ABM), one of the largest building services contractors in the country. Instead of providing Maria with a safe workplace, ABM fostered a sexually hostile work environment in which her foreman was emboldened to sexually harass her on a regular basis. This sexual harassment escalated when one night her foreman sexually assaulted her on the floor of an office she was cleaning. read more
