Board of Directors Welcomes Four

April 28, 2014 | by
Equal Rights Advocates welcomed four new members to its Board of Directors this month. The inductees bring a new influx of philanthropic, legal, and marketing experience to ERA’s existing all-star board.

The new board members are: Lucia Corral Peña, Nancy Goldberg, Barbara S. Bryant, Jennifer Liu, and Anne Mercogliano.

Lucia Corral Peña, a senior program officer for Blue Shield of California Foundation, is returning to ERA’s board.

“I’m rejoining ERA’s board 12 years after I first joined it because I continue to care deeply about equal opportunity, especially for low-income women and girls,” she said. “I’m a mother of three boys, and I know that when you focus on women – or policies and practices that are unequal – you impact families. ERA’s mission resonates with my life experience as a Latina who values equal access to education and economic opportunities as central tenets of our country’s promise to everyone, including families.”

At Blue Shield of California Foundation, Lucia manages a portfolio of grants focused on ending domestic violence. Previously, she served as director of the Western Region for Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP), managing the organization’s award-winning Funders’ Collaborative for Strong Latino Communities in five states.

Nancy Goldberg is the immediate past-president of the board of directors for the Jewish Family and Children’s Services in the Bay Area. She has served on that board for 14 years. She is also currently serving on the board of directors of the Prison University Project at San Quentin. Nancy is a founding co-chair of the San Francisco Collaborative Against Human Trafficking, and has received multiple awards for her advocacy and philanthropy.

Barbara S. Bryant has specialized in employment, sexual harassment and discrimination law for 30 years, including as a litigator and mediator. She teaches sexual harassment law at UC-Berkeley’s School of Law, is on its Henderson Center for Social Justice Advisory Council, and has been an executive board member of California Women Lawyers, Alameda County Bar Association, and Bar Association of San Francisco Labor and Employment Law Section. Prior to law school, she was a professional house carpenter and class member in a sex discrimination case of which ERA was co-counsel.

Jennifer Liu, an associate at Outten & Golden LLP, was inspired to make a change from her previous career in finance to employment law and now handles litigation, including class actions, on behalf of employees. Before joining Outten & Golden LLP, Jennifer clerked for  Judge John Koeltl of the Southern District of New York. She received her J.D./M.B.A. from Stanford Law School and the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Anne Mercogliano is the head of small and medium sized business marketing at Twitter, and brings extensive strategy and marketing experience to ERA’s board. She was a business and brand strategy consultant at both Arnold Worldwide and L.E.K. Consulting before joining Twitter.  She also served as Heller Ehrman LLP’s diversity specialist, where she founded the Opt-In Project in order to tap into the wisdom of industry leaders to find innovative strategies for the retention of professional women in the workforce.

ERA is proud to have this diverse and multi-talented group on its board.

“I’m very excited to welcome Lucia, Nancy, Barbara, Jennifer and Anne to ERA’s board of directors,” said Executive Director Noreen Farrell. “Their combined experience and skills will contribute greatly to ERA’s efforts to further its mission of gender equality in this, our 40th anniversary year.”
