Title IX Report Release and Launch of Power of IX Campaign
ERA celebrates today’s anniversary of the passage of Title IX with the launch of our Power of IX Campaign, which includes the release of a hard hitting report addressing sexual harassment and gender-based bullying in schools: Ending Harassment Now: Keeping Our Kids Safe At School.
Some of the clients who have most inspired and motivated my legal work have been students. ERA’s long tradition of fighting for education access and equity for girls has given me the opportunity to meet a tremendous range of incredible young people. They include 10-year-old Lucy from Oregon who stood up to bullying by classmates who thought she “looked like a boy,” women wrestlers who wouldn’t take unequal treatment, and student activists working to change the culture of sexual harassment in a Berkeley school district.
On this anniversary of Congress enacting Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the federal law prohibiting discrimination in educational programs, I’m taking a moment to reflect on what it takes to end the crisis of gender discrimination within our schools.
In our brand new report Ending Harassment Now: Keeping Our Kids Safe At School we explore Title IX compliance within the Bay Area’s 116 school districts, and make recommendations on how school administrators, legislators, and concerned individuals can improve access to safe and fair education for all students. You may be surprised to learn what is happening within some of the supposedly most progressive school districts in the country.
And while you’re at it, take a moment to check out the rest of our Power of IX campaign: our report, humorous educational video, quiz for students and parents, and helpful resources that can assist any student looking to learn more about Title IX, or how they can resolve issues of harassment or discrimination on their campuses.
