The Pay Gap is NUTS
We’re proud to partner with NUTrition in spreading the word about the absolutely nuts pay gap between women and men. Equal Rights Advocates has fought for gender justice for over 40 years. Our team of lawyers have fought and won for equal pay in the courtroom and in the legislature, representing women in their pay discrimination cases and working to pass some of the nation’s strongest equal pay laws.
The nutty truths:
On average in the US, women make $0.80 compared to the non-Hispanic, White man’s $1. Even nuttier, for many women of color, the gap is substantially worse:
- African-American/Black Women: $0.61
- Native American Women: $0.58
- Latinx Women: $0.53
We’re here to help.
If you think you may have an equal pay issue, use the resources we created for you below to learn more and take action.
In California? California law requires your employer to pay you the same as a co-worker of a different sex, race, or ethnicity who does work that is “substantially similar” to yours—aka work that is very similar to yours.
Outside of California? Federal law requires employers to pay you the same as a co-worker of a different sex who works in the same establishment and does work that is “substantially similar” to yours. Discrimination based on a person’s race, color, religion, sex or national origin is illegal, including discrimination regarding “compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment.”
Check out our toolkit for details on the federal laws that protect you from pay discrimination. The section on “What an Employee Can Do if She is Experiencing Pay Discrimination” starts on page 17.
