Take Action!

Here are 3 easy ways to support Latina women and their families today:

1. πŸ“‹Protect the Census

The Trump administration is trying to change the Census to exclude gender and race, which would further disempower Latinas and their communities. Tell Congress to stop this attack before the November 2 deadline!

Contact lawmakers

2. πŸ’΅ Pass the Paycheck Fairness Act

This bill would strengthen protections against pay discrimination and help close the wage gap. Email your members of Congress and urge them to pass it.

Email Congress

3. πŸ—³οΈBuild power and amplify on social media

Use our easy social media toolkit to post about Latina Equal Pay Day. Encourage others to participate in emailing legislators about the Paycheck Fairness Act or Census.

Background

Latinas face one of the widest wage gaps in the U.S. and earn far less than white, non-Hispanic men over a lifetime. The average Latina is paid 53 cents to every dollar paid to the average white, non-Hispanic man. This number includes all Latinas with reported earnings, including those working multiple part-time, seasonal, and migrant workers. For those working full-time, year-round, the wage gap widens to 60 cents for every dollar.

This means, on average, Latina workers stand to lose about $1.2 million over the course of a 40-year career stolen by the wage gap. These disparities are a clear reflection of the persistent discriminatory barriers Latinas continue to face. This gap limits Latinas’ opportunities, increases poverty risk, and impacts families for generations.

Pay equity for Latinas means stronger labor protections, fair wages, access to benefits, and pathways to economic mobility. (Read more below.)

Latinas are overrepresented in essential yet undervalued lower-wage industries that typically lack benefits and are often subject to fewer workplace protections. These conditions, in industries like farmwork and domestic work, drive greater economic insecurity and make workers more vulnerable to workplace violations like sexual harassment and wage theft.

The drivers of the wage gap are exacerbated by the federal administration’s inhumane and aggressive attacks on immigrant communities. This includes ongoing workplace raids; mass arrests, detention, and deportations; efforts to limit access to legal representation; denial and revocation of work authorization, and implementation of measures to scare immigrant families out of accessing public benefits for which they are eligible. Collectively, these actions have created a terrorizing environment of intimidation that is forcing immigrant workers to go into hiding, exit the workforce, and refrain from reporting workplace violations, all of which drive deep economic insecurity.

This Latina Equal Pay Day we are uniting to address these glaring injustices impacting Latina workers and recognizing that in the face of the persistent wage gap and ongoing federal assaults, Latina workers have agency and power to change these dynamics.

Our calls to action include concrete steps to increase financial literacy and wealth-building, oppose federal attacks to alter the Census to further disempower Latinas and their communities, advocate to enact the Paycheck Fairness Act to advance fair pay, and encourage Latinas to show up at the polls to demand that their interests are represented.

Thank you for joining us as we fight for the economic security and safety of our communities.
