Supporting Working Families in This Moment

By Noreen Farrell

Executive Director

In light of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling eviscerating voting rights, I wanted to share some ways we all can continue to fight for our communities, even outside the ballot box. Although the Court essentially gave a green light to those attempting to manipulate election outcomes, our movement is fighting back in concrete ways you can support, protecting rights for people of color, women, immigrants, and LGBTQI+ communities.

Equal Rights Advocates and our partners have been preparing for this for a long time. Now, we’re implementing our strategies and stepping in where the federal government has abandoned us.

One example: we know the Administration is about to rescind federal data collection on workforce demographics. This “EEO-1 data” is information broken down by race, gender, ethnicity, and job category. This may seem very technical and in the weeds. But large employers have been required to submit the EEO-1 report to the federal government since 1966—and it helps the federal government monitor workplace compliance with anti-discrimination laws. We cannot change what we cannot measure.

We won’t let the federal government disband important civil rights tools. We are working with partners across the country to both defend these tools and find new ways to protect workers.

We’re also standing with workers in court. ERA is suing Amazon on behalf of employees who experienced dangerous pregnancy discrimination that put their health at risk. And we’re supporting SpaceX employees in a sexual harassment case against Elon Musk.

Check out our latest report for more on our multipronged strategy to protect workers—creatively defending rights at the federal level, and bolstering protections in states like Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, and California.

And if you’re in the Bay Area, join on June 2 for ERA’s annual Gala luncheon, where we’ll hear from incredible people who are defending our rights across spheres. Each speaker embodies our event theme “Courageous Together,” and they’ll share how each of us can effectively take a stand against this fascist regime from within our different roles.

We are smarter and more creative than they’ll ever be. And if we can all be courageous together, we will prevail. Thank you for standing with us.
