Statement by Noreen Farrell, Executive Director of Equal Rights Advocates (ERA), which fights for gender justice in workplaces and schools across the country.

SAN FRANCISCO – This seven trillion-dollar budget reconciliation bill represents the ugly culmination of an all-out assault on women’s economic independence and working families across America.

For sixty years, the American Dream of economic opportunity expanded to include those who had been deliberately excluded, thanks to the courage of Black Americans and allies who fought for civil rights. Today, Congress has chosen to burn that progress to the ground.

This budget is nothing short of economic warfare against everyday Americans. It strips $800 billion from Medicaid, SNAP, and other programs that help families survive, all to hand tax breaks to billionaires and large corporations. Contrary to White House statements, this bill will raise taxes on the bottom 10% of earners while the wealthy get richer.

Most chilling is the 1,200% increase in ICE funding—a militarization of our communities that will put more masked, unidentifiable agents on our streets to terrorize families and tear apart the social fabric of our neighborhoods. This is not border security. This is state-sponsored terror.

The choice before us is clear: stand with humanity or stand with those who profit from suffering. Equal Rights Advocates chooses humanity. We choose community. And we choose to fight until this country remembers that its strength comes not from the wealth of the few, but from the dignity of the many.

This is not independence—it’s tyranny. And tyranny, as history shows us, never lasts.
