Statement by Noreen Farrell, Executive Director of Equal Rights Advocates (ERA), following the revelations of sexual abuse by Cesar Chavez

March 18, 2026–ERA stands in full solidarity with Dolores Huerta, the other survivors who have come forward, and every person harmed by Cesar Chavez. Their bravery reflects what we know to be true: survivors deserve to be believed and nothing is more important than justice for the people who were hurt. The farmworker movement was built by thousands of people. That work and the progress it has earned don’t disappear. Huerta’s legacy is strengthened by this, not diminished.

We have spent more than 50 years fighting to protect women and girls from sexual violence and harassment in the fields, in classrooms and locker rooms, at work and in other spaces. We know how often survivors are silenced by institutional loyalty, by those in power, and by fear of what the truth might cost. Dolores Huerta carried that weight for 60 years, far longer than she should have had to. We are inspired by her resilience, her courage, and her grace. We stand with her.

We are also grateful for the brave Latinx journalists who diligently reported this story.  We are deeply grateful for Tarana Burke and others in the #MeToo movement. They remind us that we do not risk the legacy of our movement by telling our truths. We are the legacy of this movement, as much as any figure from the past. 

Today, we recommit to the survivors of predators across every movement, political party, or system that rewards patriarchy. WE are our movement; let’s not be afraid to rewrite its history telling the truth and believing survivors.
