Why Closing the Women’s Wealth Gap Needs to Focus on Women of Color

On Thursday, February 11, 2021, our Executive Director, Noreen Farrell, spoke during the opening session of the Closing the Women’s Wealth Gap National Meeting: Galvanizing Action for Gender Equity. The keynote panel was moderated by Heather McCulloch of Closing the Women’s Wealth Gap, and titled “A Conversation with CWWG Founding Partners.” Noreen spoke alongside Mariko Chang-Pyle, Author and Elena Chávez Quezada, Vice President of Programs at the San Francisco Foundation.

Throughout the panel, Noreen and her fellow panelists shared key ideas and reflections around CWWG’s mission to eradicate the wealth gap for women. Included below are solution-focused highlights from Noreen:  

On why the time for radical change is now: “I think our election results and insistence on multi-policy agendas has confirmed the foundation of the network. Justice is not a zero-sum game. With so much wealth in the hands of the few, we’re not buying the myth of scarcity.”

On the need for fighting for the whole equitable pie, not merely for our favorite slices: “We should never allow childcare access to get pitted against family leave to get pitted against housing and food security.”

On the urgent need to center policy-making on the needs of Black essential worker women: “Black women were twice as likely to be furloughed, laid off during the pandemic. They’re regaining their jobs at a much lower rate. We need a complete transformation of our economic system b

On centering women of color in data collection: “We do our movement a disservice when we continually aggregate women of color in datasets. We need to continue to disaggregate data among women of color. It impacts Census data, it impacts equal pay gaps. None of us are a monolith.”
